Restructuring the right way!

It’s around this time of the year that many businesses stop and reflect on changes they need to make for the year ahead.  I have had a run of questions along the lines of “I need to get rid of this employee – can I restructure him out?”

The answer has to be “No!”  You can never restructure a person … because a restructure always affects positions not people.  So frequently I help businesses re frame their question into one that says “This position is not delivering what my business needs – what positions do I really need?”

Get that right and you will have a motivating need for change and if an employee no longer fits your structure (s)he will end up out of a job because of that.  As examples: a sales rep position may be needed – and not a Sales Manager; or an Accountant – not an Accounts Officer.  Or business might be shrinking and only need some part-time roles instead of full time.
