First sentence under the new H&S at Work Act

It is important to learn from others' mistakes - the first sentence given under the 2015 Act has generated $100,000 in fines plus $37,000 in reparations.  And the fine would have been $275,000 had the company been able to pay.  This is compared to fines of around $40,000 for similar incidents in the past.

It was a situation where the company knew about the risk and hadn't addressed it (no guards on a machine); and where the company had inadequate systems for identifying hazards and providing training.

Have you taken actions to control any hazard you are aware of in your company?  If not, now would be good!  If you want help or helpful pointers give us a ring.
