Engaging your staff

A new year is a good time to reflect on how to improve your staff commitment to your business.

A recent study by AtTask found that on average only 45% of time gets spent on key tasks; 64% of staff are confused about who does what and 80% have conflict with other departments.  So what can you do to get your staff more focused on their work?

The project manager of a team that seems to do exceptionally well - the Alliance team that maintains the Auckland Harbour bridge says there are four key ingredients:

  1. Help them understand and get excited about the purpose for their job;
  2. Allow self-management where you can;
  3. Show them how they are learning and growing; and
  4. Be open to continuous innovation

I reckon we often just don't know how effective our staff can be until we give them some freedom.
