Our company was founded by our Director, Mike Johnson, in 2006, to provide specialist HR advice to small to medium sized companies with little or no people management function of their own. Now with a team of four staff, Essential HR continues to grow, working with a current client base of around 200 companies.

Mike has been providing people management advice to small and medium sized businesses for over eleven years, and is a senior HR practitioner and HRINZ Chartered Member. Mike originally qualified as a Chartered Accountant, working for Deloittes for sixteen years. From there he moved into senior HR management resulting in a broad HR knowledge and sound business acumen.
Mike is passionate about his work with people as individuals - Essential HR doesn’t sell products or provide a “one size fits all” approach. He believes that Essential HR allows owners and managers to get on with what they are good at with the knowledge that their people are being properly looked after.
Mike also works as an independent impartial investigator under the brand of Independents. This is specifically in situations of alleged bullying or of serious misconduct (by any party in an organisation.
Beccy joined Essential HR in May 2015. Beccy quickly established herself as a highly skilled HR consultant who works alongside Mike supporting our clients where needed across the wide range of HR needs.
Beccy’s background prior to joining Essential HR was in large corporate leadership roles. She has worked for Westpac, Telecom, Inland Revenue and Meridian and over the years has had to deal with many varied and at times challenging people scenarios that usually keep business Owners and Managers awake at night. Beccy has the ability to think about the long term implications of change management on employees across a range of different business types and sizes.
Through Beccy’s years in Leadership roles she gained valuable skills in Performance management, staff development and retention and she has a great deal of end to end experience in recruiting. During her time with Essential HR she has found a real passion in helping clients sort through the often unpalatable situation of dealing with errant employees. Beccy has also gained valuable skills in deciphering often complicated and vexatious employment legislation and being able to help businesses work within it.
Beccy has two very busy boys at home so she likes to keep everyone on their toes by not working standard hours in the office but is never far away from her email to ensure she offers prompt service to our clients. Above all of this though Beccy has a fabulous sense of humour, is extremely customer focused and a pleasure to work with.
